For the third ‘Joutes’ (debate competition), the students of the Toulouse European School of Law Association (TESLA) chose to debate the enlargement of the European Union, using the 1974 quote from François Perroux ‘With a gain in size, will Europe lose its intensity?’ as the starting point.

On Monday, 26 March, Aurore Gaillet, professor in public law at Toulouse Capitole University, opened the third edition of this debate contest.

Six teams made up of three students each argued in favour or against the enlargement of Europe using historical, political-legal and economic perspectives. Their points of view were then challenged and they answered questions from a panel of judges.

This event was organised by students from TESLA with the help of the ESL faculty and administration members. The ‘Joutes’ enables students to gain a more comprehensive knowledge of current European affairs and try out public speaking and debating to the great delight of their audience.

The ESL would like to sincerely thank the TESLA organisers for their time and effort, especially Marthe Lepori, Marion Tanguy, president, Alexandre Saint-Martory, communications, Lamiae Hachim, vice-president for legal licensing and Hispanic world, Margot Sajous, and Zoé Gonzalez de Lara, vice-president for French-English double degrees
