Review in pictures: Regional languages and the construction of the State in Europe. Symposium by the IRDEIC-CEEC, 7-8 June 2018, Europe Capitole Centre of Excellence
This symposium ties in various disciplines with the intention of studying regional languages in their relationship with the State in Europe. The study of a language other than the one adopted as the State’s official language could relate to a secondary purpose. Regional languages, which are often minority languages as well, are seen as the heritage of nostalgic groups of ancient lands. Yet, looking at the issue of multiple languages spoken within a single State amounts to studying the construction process of that State, its form and its politics. This can provide a better understanding of the tensions between identities. Certain groups claim their fundamental right is the freedom to speak and communicate, both in private and in public, in the language they see as their own. This symposium ties in various disciplines with the intention of studying regional languages in their relationship with the State in Europe. Can such languages be considered as an identity preceding the State? Once the State is constructed, how does the State treat those people who intend to maintain a language that is not the one adopted as the official one by the central power? As paradoxical as it may seem since a regional language is inseparable from a given territory, does the future of these languages rest beyond those borders? Many issues will be considered during this symposium that will bring together researchers from many different countries and fields.
