‘The German constitutional judge working for democracy – national and European perspectives’, lecture by Mr Classen, IRDEIC, CEEC
The constitutional court has traditionally been considered a counterweight to majority rule. However, it also serves to ensure the proper functioning of democracy. For example, it protects democratic freedoms, the right of parliament to act as a check on executive power or for parliamentarians to speak freely in the chamber and parliament’s power on foreign policy. This talk presents an opportunity to offer a German and European perspective on these matters.
