The foundational texts of the European Union, the Rome Treaties, were signed in the eponymous city sixty years ago. These texts laid the foundations for today’s European Union. It thus seems fitting that their entry into force should be commemorated on their sixtieth anniversary.

The Rome Treaties were signed on 25 March 1957 and entered into force on 1 January 1958. Their authors, the founding fathers of the European Community, perhaps shared the same thought of making history when they added a new step towards European unity which had already begun six years earlier in Paris with the establishment of the Euro

It seems apt to commemorate that founding moment of sixty years ago. At the end of a publication series in the journal ‘Revue de l’Union européenne’ that began a year ago in December 2017, efforts have been made to evaluate the legal and institutional unity over the long term without prejudice to its material diversity. With the culmination of the publication cycle, this symposium provides the opportunity to look back and forward on the European construction with the goals of explaining this construction, and understanding its remit, shortcomings and benefits. The study of the European project has been bolstered by the authors of research in law, markets and identity, the combination of which can only improve our knowledge
